Mandate Objective Workplace Assessments for Neurodivergent Physicians

Mandate Objective Workplace Assessments for Neurodivergent Physicians
The Issue
I am a neurodivergent physician, diagnosed with autism and ADHD. I was discriminated against, bullied, harassed and eventually fired from my job because my employer refused to make reasonable adjustments or conduct objective workplace assessments that would have allowed me to continue providing essential care to my patients. This experience was devastating, especially as an immigrant who had sold my house in the UK and moved with my 5-year-old son who is also vulnerable and has autism and ADHD.
This is not just about me. There are many neurodivergent physicians across the country who face similar challenges daily. According to the National Autistic Society, only 16% of autistic adults are in full-time employment due to lack of understanding and support at workplaces (National Autistic Society). This figure could be even lower for those working in high-stress environments like healthcare.
Therefore, we must demand change now. We urge lawmakers to pass legislation making it mandatory for medical clinics employing neurodivergent physicians - those with autism or ADHD - who choose to declare their condition, to obtain an independent assessment on how best they can be supported at their workplace.
No one should lose their job because they think differently or process information differently; instead we should celebrate this diversity which brings unique perspectives into our healthcare system. Let's ensure that all physicians can provide the care much needed by their patients without fear of discrimination or harassment.
Please sign this petition today – let's stand together for fair treatment of all neurodivergent professionals in our healthcare system!
