Mandate NHS-Standard, Free Veterinary Care for All Cats and Dogs
The Issue
This week, an unthinkable incident spurred this urgent plea for change. My young dog fell gravely ill, requiring immediate veterinary care. Despite working around the clock, I was unable to meet the astronomical costs of his treatment. My insurance covered a mere thousand pounds, barely enough to provide for two days of care. After that, I was confronted with an unthinkable ultimatum: I would have to let my beloved pet pass away because I had exhausted my financial resources. This occurrence is incredibly painful and, unfortunately, far too common.
Pets are not merely animals, they are family. In the UK, an estimated 50% of households own a pet, with dogs and cats being the most popular (PFMA, 2020). However, many pet owners are faced with a harsh reality when their pet becomes ill. The cost of veterinary care can be prohibitive, forcing countless individuals to make impossible decisions between their financial stability and their pet's life.
The same way humans have access to the National Health Service (NHS) that deeds health as a right and not a privilege, we believe our pets should too. We propose that pets, particularly cats and dogs, should be entitled to an NHS-standard of medical care free-of-charge when needed.
No pet owner should have to face the heart-wrenching experience of losing their pet due to financial constraints. Let's change this reality today: For the good of our country, the welfare of our pets, and to honor companionship in its purest form. Please, sign and share this petition and ensure every pet can access the care they need.
