Mandate Network Rail to Scan and Notify Owners of Deceased Pets

Mandate Network Rail to Scan and Notify Owners of Deceased Pets
The Issue
On the night of September 25th, a beloved family pet, Mila, went missing after managing to escaping the safety of her garden and wandering onto perilous railway tracks. Despite the exhaustive search and multiple outreach to Network Rail, the distraught family received no word of Mila until two weeks later, when confirmation finally came that a beloved dog had been tragically struck and killed by a train the very night of her escape. Further compounding the family's grief was the discovery that Mila had been found by contractors, who had not adhered to the recognised protocol of scanning for a chip, denying the devastated owners the closure they so desperately sought. The devastating experience of Mila's family underscores a glaring deficiency in Network Rail's policies; an unfortunate gap that adds unnecessary distress to already grieving pet owners. As a community, we call for Network Rail to institute a policy to scan all deceased pets found on their railway tracks and to make timely contact with the owners, affording closure to those left with unanswered questions. We ask that Network Rail also keep a national comprehensive log for any domestic animal found deceased on their tracks that cannot be identified by microchip scanning. Let this be a call to action in memory of Mila, to prevent future families from enduring the same drawn-out agony. It's time to recognise the companionship and love that pets bring into our lives, and to honour their loss accordingly. So, I urge you, sign this petition today. Lend your voice to this cause, demanding transparency, respect, and compassion from Network Rail in handling such heart breaking incidents in the future.
