Mandate Motorcycle Helmet Laws and Legalize Lane Filtering and Splitting in South Carolina
The Issue
I'm a South Carolinian whose life has been deeply impacted by motorcycle accidents. Multiple close friends were tragically taken from me on the roads of our state. I've also witnessed, firsthand, rear-end collisions where motorcyclists were severely injured because negligent drivers didn't notice them in their lanes.
These experiences aren't unique to me; they form a tragic tapestry across South Carolina, where motorcyclists ride at their own risk. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2019, our state recorded one of the highest numbers of motorcyclist deaths in the entire country.
It’s crucial that we enact legislation to make our roads safer for everyone, but especially for those most vulnerable: motorcyclists. To this end, we request that South Carolina implement a universal helmet law. Helmets saved an estimated 1,870 lives in 2017 and could have saved an additional 750 if all motorcyclists had worn them (NHTSA). Helmet laws are not just about safety; they help save lives.
Not only that, but we also urge South Carolina to legalize lane filtering and splitting. These motorcycle practices, when done responsibly, can reduce rear-end collisions and cause less congestion, both of which would contribute to safer road conditions (Safe Motorcycle Riding Habits Study, UC Berkeley, 2015).
By taking action on these matters, we can reduce the accidental loss of life and prevent further injuries among those who choose to travel by motorcycle. Fewer families will suffer the pain mine has, and more South Carolinians can operate confidently on our roads each day. Please, sign this petition and help us bring these critical safety measures to fruition.
