Mandate military police to investigate crimes against servicemen
The Issue
My heart is broken. My son, GM2 Terrence M. Hill, Jr., was brutally robbed and murdered while home on a brief three-day leave in Detroit, Michigan, visiting family. He had been home for less than 24 hours when he went on a date from which he never returned. That night, he was senselessly killed in front of the girl's mother's home. This tragedy took place in 2013, and Terrence's case has since become a cold case, with no justice in sight.
The Detroit city detectives never thoroughly investigated the girl who was with Terrence, nor did they follow up on several critical leads. My son gave his life to serve this country, and he was not afforded the protection and justice he so rightly deserved. I believe that if the Military Police had been involved from the beginning, the investigation could have unfolded differently, with more rigorous attention to detail and an understanding of the unique circumstances facing active duty service members.
Currently, local police forces lack the necessary military context and urgency required to handle such delicate cases involving active duty service members on leave. The Military Police are uniquely positioned to work with these cases, given their expertise and understanding of military protocols, the sacrifices made by service members, and their families' expectations of justice and fairness.
This petition calls for a policy change directing that all crimes committed against active duty military personnel on leave be exclusively investigated by the Military Police rather than being relegated to city police forces, which may lack the specialized training and experience needed.
The evidence is clear—many cases involving our brave servicemen and women remain unresolved or cold when handled solely by city authorities. By ensuring the Military Police have jurisdiction over such cases, we can provide a more specialized, empathetic, and efficient response.
Let's honor the sacrifices made by our military personnel by ensuring they, and their families, receive the justice they deserve. Stand with me in urging the Department of Defense and relevant government entities to enact this change so no family has to endure what mine did.
