Growing up in the 90s the biggest concerns for kids like me were completing our homework and meeting up with friends. We never had the looming fear that going to school could mean not coming home. Now, as a parent with two children, two nephews, and many young cousins, I worry every day about their safety. Kids should never face the terrifying possibility of being shot at and losing their lives in such tragic circumstances. They deserve to be seen as our most important responsibility.

Moreover, gun owners must be required to sign a document pledging to store firearms securely. Should negligence lead to their weapon being used to harm someone, they must be held accountable. This initiative could drastically reduce the number of incidents wherein unauthorized individuals, particularly minors, gain access to firearms that result in tragedy.

I request that concrete action in the form of comprehensive mental health evaluations on existing and new gun owners and their family members with stringent gun safety laws go into affect. This could prevent countless tragedies. Ensuring the safety of our children is paramount, and this initiative is a necessary step towards achieving that goal.
