The Issue

American veterans who selflessly serve our nation deserve more than just our gratitude; they need our unwavering support when they return home. These brave men and women often face severe mental health challenges, including some of the highest rates of PTSD and suicides. Transitioning back to civilian life can be incredibly difficult, and the scars of war aren't always visible. Yet, far too often, these heroes are left to fight their battles alone.

The fact that many veterans struggle with mental health issues is not just a personal tragedy but a national crisis. According to the National Center for PTSD, about 11-20 out of every 100 veterans who served in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom have PTSD in a given year. Furthermore, the Department of Veterans Affairs reports that approximately 17 veterans commit suicide every day. These statistics demand immediate action from us, as a society that relies on their sacrifice.

We urge policymakers to make long-term mental health check-ins mandatory for all returning veterans. Such checks should come with guaranteed insurance coverage to ensure that mental health support is not just a one-time offer but a continuous commitment. Every veteran should have access to regular mental health evaluations and support services tailored to their specific needs, without the burden of navigating complex insurance processes or worrying about coverage.

By mandating these long-term mental health check-ins, we can provide ongoing support, identify potential mental health issues before they become unmanageable, and significantly reduce the risk of suicides among veterans. Promoting mental well-being among veterans is not only a moral imperative but also an investment in our communities, as healthy veterans can contribute significantly to society.

Our veterans have stood up for us; now it's our turn to stand up for them. Let's work together to make sure they receive the care they deserve. Sign this petition to demand mandatory long-term mental health check-ins and guaranteed insurance coverage for our veterans. It's time to show our true gratitude by ensuring they have all the tools they need to thrive after service. Your signature can make a difference.
