Mandate Local Councils to Provide Wrap Around Care for Primary School Children

The Issue

As a single parent, I find myself in a challenging situation. I am eager to increase my working hours and provide more for my family, but the lack of wrap around care availability in my area is preventing me from doing so. This issue is not just personal to me; it affects many families across our community and nation.

Wrap around care - before and after school programs - are crucial for parents who work full time. These services not only ensure the safety of our children but also allow parents to fulfill their professional responsibilities without worry. However, these services are lacking in many areas, leaving parents like myself struggling financially.

According to a report by the Family and Childcare Trust (2018), only 17% of local councils in England reported having enough childcare available for working parents. This shortage puts an undue burden on families, especially those with single-parent households or low-income earners who rely heavily on these services.

We urge all local councils across the country to make it mandatory to provide wrap around care for all primary school aged children. By doing so, we can support working families better and ensure that no child is left without adequate supervision before or after school hours.
