Mandate lifetime no-contact orders for sex offenders

Mandate lifetime no-contact orders for sex offenders
The Issue
In my life, I've faced the deeply personal and distressing experience of being contacted by the person who assaulted me, even after they were found guilty and placed on the lifetime sex offender registry. This lifeline of contact was a haunting reminder of the past that I desperately wanted to leave behind. Many victims like myself are forced to tread the difficult waters of reinforcing protective measures every few years, often only for two years at a time. Each renewal requires revisiting the traumatic incident, describing it in painstaking detail before a court to secure further protection, perpetuating the trauma and hindering our ability to fully move forward.
Sexual offenders listed on the Lifetime Registry should also have a lifetime no-contact order placed against them concerning their victims. It is illogical and deeply unjust that a mechanism intended to protect the survivors inherently revictimizes them by causing continuous retraumatization.
Statistically, sexual violence continues to profoundly affect millions each year. According to RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network), an American is sexually assaulted every 68 seconds, and every 9 minutes, that victim is a child. Providing a lifetime no-contact order contributes to reducing ongoing victimization and further ensures victims' rights are respected long after the sentencing.
A lifetime no-contact order brings peace of mind to victims, knowing they are forever protected from unwanted re-engagement with their aggressor. It alleviates ongoing legal and emotional burdens, and reinforces the victim's ability to heal, knowing that the law supports their continued safety.
We urge lawmakers and authorities to implement and support policies that give victims enduring protection. Join us in calling for these critical changes to secure a lifetime of safety and emotional liberation for victims everywhere.
Please sign this petition and lend your voice to a cause that demands justice and true protection for survivors of sexual violence.
