The Issue

In August of 2024, my cousin's life was tragically cut short by someone who was supposed to cherish and protect her. Instead, he turned into her worst nightmare. Despite multiple warnings, including a severe beating in April of 2024 which landed him in jail, the system failed to protect her. Even with a restraining order in place, this man managed to defy the legal boundaries and ultimately took her life. Her children are now left to grow up in a world without their loving mother, a victim of a broken system that doesn't adequately punish domestic abusers.

Domestic abuse is a heinous crime that often shatters lives and goes underreported due to fear of retaliation and lack of adequate legal repercussions. Current laws do not do enough to protect victims or deter potential abusers. Data from the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) reveals that one in four women and one in nine men experience severe intimate partner physical violence. This is not just a statistic; these are real lives affected by violence that could potentially be prevented with strict legal measures.

The current legal framework is inadequate, frequently allowing abusers to re-enter the lives of victims due to light sentencing and lenient law enforcement practices. In too many cases, this leads to repeated violence and, tragically, loss of life, as we've painfully experienced with my cousin's murder.

We need a law that mandates life sentences for individuals who are convicted of domestic abuse causing serious harm or death to others. This law would not only act as a deterrent but also ensure that repeat offenders are permanently removed from situations where they could continue to inflict harm. Implementing such a law could potentially save countless lives and spare families like mine from unspeakable heartache.

It's time to demand legislative change. By signing this petition, you are advocating for stricter laws and sending a clear message that society will not tolerate domestic abuse. Let's push for a future where love is safe, and abusers are held accountable for their actions with the fullest extent of the law. Please join me in calling on lawmakers to act now, before another innocent life is lost.
