Mandate Insurance Coverage for Personal GPS Tracking Devices
Mandate Insurance Coverage for Personal GPS Tracking Devices
The Issue
As a parent and previous educator of children with autism, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges and fears associated with their safety. My son, my godson, and many other children I've had the privilege of teaching or loving in my life are at risk of elopement due to their cognitive disabilities. This is not an isolated issue - it's a widespread concern affecting countless families across our nation.
According to the National Autism Association, nearly half of children with autism engage in wandering behavior. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children had 286 children on the autism spectrum reported missing to them in 2021. The consequences can be severe; between 2011 and 2016 alone, over 100 deaths were reported related to wandering incidents among those with autism (National Autism Association). In such cases, personal GPS tracking devices can be lifesaving tools that provide peace of mind for caregivers while ensuring the safety of these vulnerable individuals.
The concern with elopement does not end with autism. Dementia and Alzheimer’s are also a concern for many families. With the rising cost of healthcare, many families are making the hard decision to keep their loved ones at home instead of in healthcare facilities, which puts them at a greater risk for wandering.
However, these essential devices are not currently covered by insurance policies. This leaves many families unable to afford them despite their proven effectiveness in preventing tragic incidents.
We call upon our lawmakers and insurance companies to recognize personal GPS tracking devices as necessary medical equipment for children and all persons with cognitive disabilities who are at risk of elopement. By doing so, we can ensure that all families have access to this vital tool regardless of their financial situation.
Please sign this petition urging insurers to cover personal GPS tracking devices - because every person’s safety should be a guaranteed right, not a privilege dependent on one's ability to pay.
