Mandate Installation of PECS Boards in Local Public Parks-Sarnia

The Issue

I am moved to action by a personal tragedy. A dear friend lost their 2.5-year-old child in a drowning incident, an event made even more heartbreaking by the presence of her nonverbal brother who lives with Autism and faces communication challenges. Our last memory together was at Centennial Park, and it is there that we wish to make a difference.

In honour of these children and to prevent similar tragedies, we are urging the local government in Sarnia, ON, Canada to mandate the installation of Picture Exchange Communication Boards (PECS) in all public parks. These boards are designed to assist individuals with Autism or other communication difficulties in expressing their needs or concerns when words fail them.

According to Autism Ontario (2018), approximately 1 in 66 children are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) annually. Many among this population struggle with verbal communication and could greatly benefit from PECS installations.

By making this change, we will not only be complying with the Ontario Disabilities Act but also creating safer and more inclusive environments for all park-goers. This is not just about compliance; it's about understanding, empathy, and inclusivity - values that should be reflected across our community spaces.

Please join us on this mission for change - sign our petition today! Let's ensure every voice can be heard even when words cannot be spoken.
