Mandate Higher Safety Barriers or Pine Trees along I-78, Hellertown, PA
The Issue
I live beside I-78 highway in Hellertown, Pennsylvania. Over the past few years, we've seen accidents damage the short wall separating our home from the highway. Tires came dislodged and landed in our front yard, posing a significant threat to the safety and peace of our dwelling, especially the well-being of my children.
It has become evident that the existing wall is inadequate in length and strength to protect our home and our lives from near-accident incidents and debris from the highway. This issue, unfortunately, is not unique to our situation. According to a 2018 PennDOT report, there were 6,807 crashes involving debris on Pennsylvania roads.
We implore the Department of Highways, the borough of Hellertown, and those tasked with road safety in our region to either increase the height of the current barrier along I-78 or plan and plant a row of full-grown pine trees along the existing wall. This will not only provide an effective shield against incidents but also aesthetically enhance our community and possibly reduce noise pollution from the highway. We believe these measures, if implemented, will significantly increase the safety of homes and families living adjacent to this highway.
Laws can change and constructive actions can be taken to protect lives and prevent incidents. Let's demand a safer route for I-78 and a peaceful environment for our families to live in. Please join us in making this pressing concern heard. Sign this petition today.
