Imagine living in a 3rd floor apartment, temperatures reaching up to 92° feeling like 110°, no air conditioning! This has been the harsh reality for some residents in Ohio for the past two summers.

In my own community.,one of my neighbors has had to leave their home just to find a place cool enough to sleep, so they can function properly at work the next day. They must endure separation from their beloved cat left behind in an unbearably hot apartment.

 Unfortunately, I don't have the luxury of staying with family/friends since their homes aren't an option for me.

While Ohio mandates that rental properties provide heat during the winter, there is a glaring omission in the requirement for adequate cooling in the sweltering summer months. This oversight leaves tenants vulnerable to extreme temperatures, leading to discomfort, health risks, and additional emotional and financial burdens.

Lack of cooling not only impacts our quality of life but poses serious health risks. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, prolonged exposure to excessive heat can cause heat exhaustion, heatstroke, and even death. It is especially dangerous for pets, the elderly, and individuals with health conditions. Central air units for cooling must be operational where they exist AND in their absence, landlords should be required to provide alternative solutions such as window units.

In addition to the health risks mentioned above, mold growth increases with humidity levels often over 50% when air conditioning is it running to remove the humidity in the home. This mold growth can bring about more heath concerns. As well as, damage the apartment and it's contents. 

If landlords do not fix a/c units or replace them ,it not enough to be let out of leases . This fix is required . Landlords must provide alternative cooling units and a reduction of rent to compensate for increased electric charges . 

This not only will help the renter. The landlord's property will be less likely at risk to mold exposure.

To ensure the well-being and safety of Ohio residents, we are calling on state lawmakers to mandate that all rental properties provide both heating and cooling units. This regulation should ensure that all central air systems are functional or, in their absence, supplementary window units are provided during the summer with reduced rental costs .
