The Issue

My child has been directly impacted by contracting head lice on three separate occasions, all within one week, due to children from other households returning to school with chronic or improperly treated head lice - and I know my child is not the only child being impacted!  This situation is not only frustrating but also a significant disruption to my child's education, well-being, long term mental health, our family's daily routine and finances.

Head lice are a common problem in schools across Ontario, yet the only consistency in how school policies manage outbreaks is that they are not being managed at all. According to the Canadian Paediatric Society, head lice can spread quickly in classroom settings, disrupting the learning environment and causing undue stress and financial hardship for affected families. In many cases, children with untreated head lice continuously attend classes, unknowingly spreading the lice to classmates and creating an ongoing cycle of infestation.

Currently, many Ontario elementary schools lack clear mandates to temporarily restrict a student's entry back into classrooms until an appropriate and effective treatment for head lice has been completed. This gap in policy allows for the potential spread of lice, leading to repeated instances of infestation for many children, including our own.

By mandating that Ontario elementary schools have clear and enforceable policies directed by local Public Health Units, Public Health Ontario, Ontario Health and the Canadian Paediatric Society to temporarily restrict entry of students with head lice, we can significantly reduce the spread among students. Schools equipped with such policies can work in unison with parents and local Public Health Units to ensure that children only return to the classroom once they are lice-free, thereby minimizing the risk of repeated infestations.

We urge the Ministry of Education, Public Health Ontario and local Health Units to revise current regulations to provide schools with the authority and responsibility to enact temporary attendance restrictions for students found to have head lice. This change would not infringe on any student's right to education, but rather protect all students' well-being by creating a healthier learning environment.

A collective approach involving parents, educators, and health professionals is needed to combat this issue. Let us protect our children from unnecessary distress and interruption by ensuring that Ontario schools are empowered to act decisively against head lice infestations.

Sign this petition to call on the Ontario Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health, and local Public Health Units to work collaboratively to implement a clear mandate to regulate head lice management in Ontario elementary schools.
