My sister, like many others in New York State, lives with autism. It's a reality that families across our state face every day. However, the current insurance law does not require health insurers to provide full coverage for the prevention, early detection, diagnosis and treatment of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This is a significant barrier to getting the necessary help at an earlier age.

Autism affects 1 in 54 children in the United States according to estimates from CDC’s Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network. Early intervention affords the best opportunity to support healthy development and deliver benefits across the lifespan. Yet without full coverage from health insurers, this crucial early intervention becomes financially burdensome or even impossible for many families.

We need an amendment to our insurance law that requires health insurers to provide full coverage for ASD-related treatments. This change will ensure children receive necessary care without imposing undue financial stress on their families.
