Mandate Free Provision of Menstrual Products by the South African Government
The Issue
Periods are natural, but in South Africa, they’ve become a barrier to education, dignity, and dreams.
Every month, over 7 million menstruating individuals in our country cannot afford or access basic sanitary products. This isn’t just about pads, it’s about opportunity and equality.
Right now, 1 in 3 girls between the ages of 9 and 18 miss up to 18 weeks of school every year simply because they don’t have what they need to manage their period. That’s almost half the school year gone, not because they don’t want to learn, but because something completely natural is treated like a luxury.
This is period poverty, and it’s holding back our youth. It deepens inequality and keeps young girls trapped in cycles of shame, stigma, and missed opportunities.
But here’s the good news, change is possible. Countries like Scotland have already shown the world what’s possible by making menstrual products completely free for everyone who needs them, proving that when a government prioritizes dignity, everyone wins.
South Africa can do this too. ✊🏾
We’re calling on our government to legislate the free provision of menstrual products in schools, clinics, and communities nationwide. This isn’t just about pads, it’s about giving every young person the chance to show up fully for their education and future.
No one’s dreams should be cut short because of a period.
By signing this petition, you’re saying enough is enough. You’re standing for a South Africa where dignity isn’t a privilege, it’s a right, guaranteed by our Constitution.
