Mandate Food Waste Recycling in All New Jersey Municipalities

The Issue

As a concerned citizen of New Jersey, I am deeply troubled by the environmental impact of food waste. When discarded food ends up in landfills, it generates methane - a greenhouse gas that is 28 times more potent than carbon dioxide over a 100-year period (source: Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change). Moreover, this valuable resource could be utilized to create compost, animal feed or renewable energy instead of contributing to climate change.

In light of these facts and the urgent need for sustainable waste management practices, we must call upon our local governments to implement mandatory food waste recycling services for residents and businesses throughout New Jersey. This would not only help reduce our state's carbon footprint but also promote circular economy principles by turning waste into resources.

The State of Vermont has already mandated universal recycling and composting (source: Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation), demonstrating that such initiatives are both feasible and beneficial. Although New Jersey is already one step in the same direction since it passed the bill, A2371, requiring all large scale food waste generators to separate and recycle their food waste, we believe it's high time for New Jersey to fully follow suit.

By signing this petition, you are urging the municipalities across New Jersey to take immediate action towards implementing comprehensive food waste recycling programs. Your signature can make a difference in our fight against climate change while promoting sustainability within our communities. Please sign this petition today!
