The Issue

My heart was shattered when my 6-month-old puppy contracted parvovirus. Eager to save her, we rushed to the vet. We expected urgency and compassion, but were instead met with three options shaped solely by our financial standing. For $1000 upfront, we were promised life-saving antibiotics, IV drips, and hospitalization, offering a 90% recovery chance. A $500 payment brought a slightly lower chance at 75%, also including IV, hospitalization, and antibiotics. But when all we could muster was $200, all they offered was a single in-office shot of antibiotics. We were sent home with a bag of saline, needles, a syringe, and few medications. Tragically, within 12 hours, she passed away, her small body succumbing to the virus.

This devastating experience exposed a glaring inequality in the treatment of pets with parvo in Valencia County, NM. It is unjust that the level of care our beloved companions receive hinges not on their medical condition, but on the economic status of their owners. This is a systemic issue that should not pose a barrier to receiving critical, life-saving veterinary care which should be universally accessible.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), parvovirus is a highly contagious viral illness that can be deadly for dogs if not treated timely and effectively. Statistics indicate that aggressive treatment can have success rates over 90%. It is unconscionable that financial barriers decide the fate of our pets when modern veterinary medicine can offer them a fighting chance.

We urge lawmakers to recognize veterinary care for parvovirus as an essential service akin to emergency medical care for humans. A standardized rate that assures immediate and complete treatment for parvo, irrespective of the owner's financial capacity, is crucial. Vets should practice compassion over commerce, ensuring all dogs receive the essential care they deserve.

Let's make it a law to require uniform treatment standards for dogs with parvovirus in Valencia County, NM, guaranteeing that every dog receives access to life-saving interventions regardless of their owner's monetary situation. Help us protect our four-legged family members. Sign this petition and stand with us for equality in veterinary care.
