Mandate epinephrine in all eateries

Mandate epinephrine in all eateries
The Issue
My heart races every time we head out for a family meal. My toddler, only just beginning to explore the world, lives with a severe dairy allergy. It’s not just a statistic – it’s our reality. One unfathomable bite, one accidental exposure, and our family's joyful outing spirals into sheer panic and fear. We've experienced those heart-stopping moments, frozen between fear and the desperate rush to address an anaphylactic reaction. In an emergency, every second counts. I am not alone; countless families across the country grapple with such fears daily, each venture outside a calculated risk.
Currently, not all food establishments are mandated to have epinephrine auto-injectors, commonly known as EpiPens, readily available. This unpredictability poses a significant risk to individuals with life-threatening allergies, including our precious children. Countries like Australia and parts of the United States have pioneering measures that equip restaurants with EpiPens, effectively reducing the time it takes to administer life-saving medication during an allergy emergency.
We need to advocate for a straightforward yet potentially life-saving change: legislation mandating all eateries to maintain at least one accessible EpiPen or epinephrine auto-injector on site. Alongside, staff should undergo basic training to recognize symptoms of anaphylaxis and provide an immediate response. It is a small effort with the potential to save countless lives. Given the increasing prevalence of food allergies in society—affecting around one in 13 children according to the Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE)—such legislation is overdue.
Imagine the relief knowing that any restaurant your family visits is equipped to handle an allergy emergency. It’s a simple provision that could turn a moment of terror into one of relief, and maybe even survival. This is a realistic and essential step towards ensuring safety in public dining experiences.
Please join me in urging lawmakers to consider the peace and security this legislation could bring to millions of families. Sign this petition to help make epinephrine accessibility mandatory in all food establishments, transforming prospects from potential tragedy to trust in safety.
