Mandate Emergency Veterinary Care Irrespective of Financial Standing

The Issue

In a world where we consider our pets as vital family members, an alarming disregard lurks in the form of limited emergency veterinary care. This issue is personal, as my emotional support animal, my baby boy, fell victim to unattended medical needs at an emergency vet clinic due to a money disagreement. No pet should have to suffer, much less die, amidst such bureaucratic apathy.

We firmly believe that all pets should have access to immediate medical attention in emergencies, just like us humans, without their financial situation becoming a barrier. When life is at stake, it is unfair and inhumane to hobble care by financial leverage. If a vet clinic denies this essential service based on the pet parent's financial standing, it should lose its right to practice for disregarding the very essence of its purpose - saving lives.

Recent surveys show that more than 67% of U.S. households, or about 85 million families, own a pet (American Pet Products Association, 2019-2020). This means, among these countless families, numerous pets may be at risk due to financial constraints in case of emergency.

Our demand is simple – make it mandatory to administer emergency medical care to all pets, regardless of the owner's ability to pay upfront. And similar to human health care, the pet parent should receive a bill later, without being denied help at the critical moment.

Let this form a pivot to change the current scenario. Sign this petition to prioritize the well-being and lives of our pets above all. Together, we can redefine the parameters of emergency veterinary care and safeguard the rights of our four-legged family members.
