Mandate Emergency Treatment for Insured Pets in All Veterinary Clinics

Mandate Emergency Treatment for Insured Pets in All Veterinary Clinics
The Issue
I am writing this petition today because of my heart-wrenching experience with my beloved dog, Buddy, who ingested plant fertilizer and was dangerously poisoned. My best friend's life was hanging in the balance, and in desperation, I rushed him to our local Animal Hospital. Shockingly, instead of immediate assistance, I was told they could only treat him if I paid the entire bill on picking him up.
Buddy is not just a pet; he is a significant part of my family, and I have always prioritized his health and wellbeing. He is fully insured, with coverage up to £12k including routine check-ups, vaccinations, and dental treatments. Despite such comprehensive insurance, I faced an unthinkable situation where his life was seen as less critical than immediate payment.
This incident is not an isolated one, and many pet owners with insured pets suffer similar ordeals. It’s deeply troubling that veterinary clinics would deny emergency treatment built into a pet's insurance because of payment protocols.
We believe - as do many veterinarians - that the ability to pay should not dictate whether an animal receives necessary emergency veterinary care. Therefore, we urge for a requirement for all veterinary clinics and hospitals to administer emergency treatments to insured pets, notwithstanding upfront payment.
Nobody should have to experience the heartache of watching their pet suffer because of bureaucratic red tape. The wellbeing of our pets should always be the priority. Please sign this petition. Every signature brings us one step closer to a world where no insured pet is denied the emergency care they need and deserve.
