Mandate Elevators in Work Buildings with More Than Three Flights of Stairs
The Issue
After a harrowing personal experience of having to climb three flights of stairs at my workplace despite suffering from Failed Back Surgery Syndrome (FBSS) and a terminal reliance on a walker and back brace, I appeal for justice. I endured this nightmare for eight years without compensation following an accident at work that left me physically incapacitated. This emotional, physical and financial ordeal has not only caused traumatic stress, debilitating depression, recurring nightmares, but also immense strain on my familial relationships.
An estimated 80% of adults suffer from at least one episode of back pain during their lifetime, with cases of Failed Back Surgery Syndrome (FBSS) accounting for considerable proportions (Source: NCBI). The absence of provisions like elevators in workplaces, particularly in buildings with more than three flights of stairs, makes daily navigation a torturous ordeal for persons suffering from conditions similar to mine. This not only poses unnecessary challenges but can also exacerbate existing health issues leading to adverse effects on mental health.
This appeal is poignant in light of the American Disability Act's (ADA's) regulations which mandate reasonable accommodations to qualified employees with disabilities to enable them to perform their job duties. Evidently, requiring an elevator in high-rise buildings falls within the scope of these necessary accommodations.
Through this petition, I implore legislative change that mandates the installation of elevators in office buildings with more than three flights of stairs. This will bolster the mobility for workers with disabilities, making the workplace a safer, more accessible environment for all employed individuals, irrespective of their physical abilities.
Join me in this fight for equitable work environments. Please sign and share this petition to compel relevant authorities to mandate elevators in work buildings with more than three flights of stairs.
