Mandate Elected Officials to Rely on Social Security and Public Health Insurance

The Issue

We, the people, elect our officials with the hope that they will represent us and our interests. However, a disparity exists when these elected officials receive pensions and health insurance benefits far superior to what is available to their constituents.

We propose that all publicly elected officials should not have any pension or health insurance provided or funded by their respective offices other than social security benefits and the same pool of health insurers available to their constituency or Medicare if age appropriate.

This change would ensure that those in power are subject to the same conditions as those they govern, fostering empathy and understanding for the struggles many citizens face. According to a report by The Atlantic (2016), Congressional members enjoy a wide range of benefits including federal pension plans which can often exceed six figures annually - far more than average American retirees who rely solely on Social Security.

Furthermore, while millions of Americans struggle with healthcare costs, our elected representatives have access to top-tier medical care at little cost. This discrepancy creates an environment where lawmakers may be less incentivized to reform systems they do not personally rely on.

By requiring public servants to utilize the same services as their constituents, we can create a government that truly understands and represents its people's needs.
