Mandate Doctors to Notify Patients of Irregular Blood Work Results
The Issue
My name is anonymous, and I speak as a victim of medical oversight, resided in Fort Wayne, IN, USA, that has caused significant distress in my life over the past few months. I have been experiencing severe symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, and extreme anxiety. It was only when I checked my own laboratory results, outside of my doctors' awareness, that I discovered I am anemic.
The onus of this discovery came after multiple blood tests performed on April 17, 18, May 5th and July 31, 2024. The results indicated low Red Blood Cell count, hemoglobin, and hematocrit levels – clear indications of anemia. Unfortunately, four different doctors neglected to inform me of these precise medical conditions revealed by my blood work. I have suffered for many months with this and it could have been easily avoided.
Anemia, neglected and untreated, can lead to grave health implications, including organ damage due to insufficient oxygen supply caused by low red blood cell count. In 2019, an estimated 10% of women in the U.S. suffered from anemia, and numbers could be significantly higher due to poor reporting processes (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).
The current system fails when patients are kept in the dark, leading to potential health crises due to the lack of necessary and timely interventions. There must be a legal obligation for doctors to make reports of irregular or critical blood work results to patients transparently and promptly. Furthermore, patients need to have recourse adequate enough to hold doctors accountable for any omissions or oversight, including the right to take legal action should such negligence occur.
Join me in urging the Fort Wayne local government to enact legislation that encompasses these protections. Your signature can make a significant stand for patient rights, ensuring transparency in the patient-doctor relationship, and potentially save lives in the process. Let's not allow another individual to discover their severe health conditions too late. Please, sign the petition.
