Mandate Disability-Friendly Equipment in All Public Parks
The issue
My son is in a wheelchair, and our family's heart breaks every time we visit the park. Unlike his sister, he cannot play freely due to the lack of accessible equipment. This is not just our story - it's a reality for countless families with differently-abled children across the country.
My son Elijah who is now 10 hasn't been able to go to a park with his siter for over 2 years due to the fact he is so upset and hurt he can't play on the swing with her or do any other wheelchair friendly activites.
Public parks are meant to be spaces where everyone can enjoy outdoor activities, regardless of their physical abilities. However, many parks do not have swings or other play items that are disability and wheelchair friendly. Furthermore, some parks require keys from local councils to access these facilities - an additional barrier that further excludes those with disabilities.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 1 billion people live with some form of disability worldwide. This means that potentially millions of children are being denied their right to play due to inaccessible public spaces.
We believe it should be mandatory for all public parks to have accessible equipment such as swings and other items that do not require special permissions or keys from local councils. Our children deserve equal opportunities for fun and recreation.
We urge policymakers at all levels - local, state, and national - to enact legislation requiring public parks to install disability-friendly equipment. Let us make our public spaces truly inclusive for everyone.
Please sign this petition if you believe in equal access for all children at our public parks.
