Mandate de-escalation training for Arizona police

Mandate de-escalation training for Arizona police
The Issue
My friend, armed with a knife and in a mental health crisis, tragically lost his life after being shot by Mesa police. Despite his expressed intention to harm only himself, his inability to comply with orders to drop the weapon resulted in a fatal encounter. This heartbreaking event is not isolated. Numerous reports in Arizona show that individuals experiencing similar crises often feel more compelled to endanger themselves when confronted by police, primarily due to the current methods of intervention.
The time for change is now. The Mesa police as well as Pinal County officers/ Arizona officers overall need to undergo specialized training in de-escalation techniques, especially in situations involving mental health crises. These officers are usually the first responders in such critical situations, and their approach significantly impacts the outcome. From recent studies, we know that proper de-escalation techniques can reduce the likelihood of violence and lead to a more peaceful resolution in 60% of mental health crisis situations.
Implementing annual training and certification for de-escalation will ensure that officers not only gain the knowledge but update and refresh their skills regularly. This education should be comprehensive, involving mental health professionals to equip the police with the necessary tools to handle emotionally intense scenarios with empathy and efficacy.
This petition is a call to action for the leadership of our police department and city officials in Mesa, AZ to make de-escalation training mandatory and ongoing. If this training had been in place, my friend and others like him in distress may have had a chance for intervention that prioritized their lives and protected them during their most vulnerable times.
Let's work together to promote safer communities and prevent further tragedies. Your signature can lead to a mandatory policy change that could save lives.
