Mandate DBS checks for all trades and labourers

The Issue

A quick Google search for news articles shows just how prevalent and harrowing violent crime is.

As a renter come homeowner concerned about the safety and well-being of my family, I recognise the importance of knowing who enters our homes. It is unsettling to think that individuals with a criminal record of violent/dangerous crime could be working in our most private spaces without any form of background verification or openness. Tradespeople and labourers often enter homes for repairs, maintenance, or construction, and homeowners deserve the peace of mind that comes with knowing these individuals do not pose a risk.

Currently, there is no legal requirement for trades and labourers to undergo Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks, which leaves families vulnerable to potential threats from individuals who may have violent criminal histories. According to recent statistics, a significant percentage of homeowners express concern over allowing unknown tradespeople into their homes. By requiring mandatory DBS checks for all tradespeople and labourers, we can reduce this anxiety and create a safer environment for everyone.

Implementing this measure is not just about preventing crime but also about building trust and credibility within the trades industry. This policy could be efficiently managed by requiring companies to verify their employees' DBS status as a part of the hiring process, thereby ensuring compliance and accountability. Companies such as royal mail already require this for handling post and data, therefore it stands to reason tradespeople entering the homes of potentially vulnerable people should undergo the same checks.

I urge lawmakers, regulatory bodies, and trade associations to collaborate on establishing mandatory DBS or similar checks for tradespeople and labourers. Let us work together to protect ourselves and uphold the highest safety standards. Please sign this petition to show your support for this crucial initiative and make our communities safer.
