This is a matter close to my heart, as I, like many others, have witnessed first-hand the demands for DBS checks in numerous fields of employment and voluntary positions. Yet, it strikes me as illogical and inconsistent that our own elected Members of Parliament are not subject to the same rigorous standards.

A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is a way of preventing unsuitable people from working with vulnerable groups, such as children. Major industries and services in the UK, including education, healthcare, and social work, insist upon these checks (GOV.UK). Yet, the very individuals who shape our policies and laws, and thereby hold a massive influence over these vulnerable groups, are not obliged to submit to a DBS check.

With the high level of trust and responsibility bestowed upon our MPs, it seems only right and fair to expect them to pass the same level of scrutiny that thousands of other citizens are required to. Ensuring our MPs have undergone a DBS check is a crucial step in promoting transparency, integrity, and public trust in our democratic system.
