The Issue

My heart sank the day I discovered that my special needs son had wandered into a canal while at school. As a parent, this is my worst nightmare, and it is an experience no family should have to endure. Canals that are near schools, nurseries, or any child-centered institutions pose a significant risk. These open waterways, so often overlooked, present dangerous and avoidable hazards to our beloved children.

In our communities, the safety of our children must be our top priority. Statistics from various safety boards reveal that drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental death for children, especially those with special needs who may not recognize the dangers of water. The American Academy of Pediatrics reports that children with autism spectrum disorder are 160 times more likely to die from drowning compared to other kids. This is more than just numbers; these statistics represent innocent lives lost and shattered families.

The solution is clear and achievable: legislate that every canal within a specified distance—ideally no more than 500 feet—from schools and nurseries should be securely covered. Such a measure would significantly reduce the risk of tragic accidents happening. By covering these canals, we are not just investing in infrastructure; we are investing in the safety and future of our children.

I urge lawmakers to take swift action on this matter before another preventable incident occurs. With your support, we can push for immediate legislative action to protect our children and make our communities safer. Please sign this petition to demand that our local governments enact laws mandating that canals near schools be covered. Together, we can ensure a safer environment for every child in our communities, leaving no room for tragedy where there could be safety.
