I am a young black woman compelled to launch this petition out of a deep desire for understanding my rich history. A clear knowledge of black history is integral to my identity, and it is crucial that all schools approach this aspect of education with accuracy and completeness. Currently, the narrative taught about black history in public schools is woefully inadequate and lacking in depth. According to a Southern Poverty Law Centre study, more than half of the states in the US fail to teach about slavery comprehensively, resorting to a superficial recounting of events. This alarming misrepresentation fails for students to grasp the depth and weight of black history, undermining the years of struggle, resilience, and triumph of black people in the face of adversity. For us to progress as an inclusive and diverse society, we need to mandate comprehensive black history education in all public schools. This holistic approach will not only enrich the understanding among all students, irrespective of their colour but also uplift black students' pride about their identity.
