Mandate Changing Tables in SF Restaurant Restrooms

Mandate Changing Tables in SF Restaurant Restrooms
The Issue
I just visited a restaurant in San Francisco with my little one, and a diaper disaster hit us hard. My baby had a massive blowout and, to my horror, there wasn't a single changing table in the restroom. I found myself wrestling with my baby on the grimy restroom floor, trying desperately not to let the mess spread all over us. It's shocking that in a city as progressive as San Francisco, restaurants are equipped with high chairs but not essential facilities like changing tables for parents.
This isn't just about my experience—it's an issue that impacts countless parents and caregivers navigating the city's dining scene with young children in tow. Changing a diaper on a bathroom floor is unsanitary, inconvenient, and frankly, unjust. Parents deserve amenities that allow them to take care of their children's needs with dignity.
We're calling on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors to require all restaurants within city limits to install changing tables in both men's and women's restrooms. Additionally, providing a gender-neutral option ensures inclusivity for all caregivers and parents. Many modern cities have already embraced this change, recognizing that providing a clean and safe place to change a diaper is a fundamental service for dining establishments.
According to the U.S. Census, there are over 100,000 children living in San Francisco, along with thousands of visiting families each year. The demand for family-friendly amenities in public spaces is unmistakable. Moreover, the benefits extend to restaurants too—businesses can attract more clientele by demonstrating they care about the needs of all patrons, including families.
Implementing this change can start with cost-effective solutions. Changing tables do not require extensive remodeling, can be easily cleaned, and fold up neatly against the wall when not in use.
By mandating the installation of changing tables, San Francisco can set a precedent for other cities, showing that it prioritizes the comfort and convenience of families. It's time to make dining out accessible and comfortable for everyone.
Please sign this petition to urge San Francisco's leaders to take immediate action and ensure no parent or caregiver has to endure such unsanitary and embarrassing situations in the future.
