Mandate canine encounter training for police

The Issue

On October 15, 2025, in Dundalk, Ontario, an unsettling event unfolded. A beloved family dog was shot by the police after they bit a child. This incident raises a significant question: why are police officers, without specialized canine encounter training, the first responders in such situations?

The dog in question was likely an integral part of the children's lives—possibly a cherished family member. While the children suffered only minor injuries from the bite, the emotional trauma of witnessing their pet being fatally wounded by law enforcement is deeply concerning.  If you are a witness, please fill out this form.

This tragic event underscores a crucial gap in our response system. It's imperative that we re-evaluate who should be the first responders in such situations. Animal services, staffed with professionals trained to handle animal behavior, would be better suited to respond to animal-related emergencies. Additionally, there should be a focus on humane education programs for children to understand animal behavior and on offering free dog training to prevent such incidents.

Statistics reveal that 77% of dog bite incidents are by a known dog, often a family pet. This highlights the need for preventive measures, not reactive ones. By implementing regular canine encounter training for police officers, we can better prepare them for situations where they might come into contact with animals, reducing the likelihood of such tragic outcomes.

This petition urges the authorities to mandate canine encounter training for police officers and reassign animal control tasks to animal services where they belong. Such initiatives not only protect our pets but also ensure that officers are not put in positions where they must take actions that are outside their expertise.

Let us work towards a system where both children and their furry family members are protected and supported. Please support this petition to make our communities safer and more compassionate. Sign the petition today to help make this change a reality.
