In Colorado, my life was turned upside down by a corrupt DHS caseworker who fabricated lies, leading to the termination of my parental rights despite having maintained 198 days of sobriety. This incident opened my eyes to a crucial need for transparency and accountability within the Department of Human Services (DHS).

Every year, numerous families in Colorado interact with DHS caseworkers during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. With the power to make life-altering decisions, these caseworkers must be held accountable for their actions. Unfortunately, the absence of oversight mechanisms enables potential abuses of power and misrepresentation, as I have painfully experienced.

Implementing a policy requiring DHS caseworkers to wear body cameras during all interactions with families can provide an objective account of these encounters, protecting both the families and the caseworkers. Studies in other sectors show that body cameras can reduce complaints against workers by up to 93% (source: Rialto Police Department study) and can foster trust through transparency.

Additionally, other jurisdictions around the country are already adopting similar practices in social services with promising results. This change can lead to fairer interactions, build trust in the system, and ensure justice for all parties involved.
