Mandate Animal Shelters to Release High-Risk Animals Only to Trained Professionals

The Issue

As a resident of Miami-Dade County, I have personally experienced the devastating consequences of ineffective animal shelter policies. My pet was unprovokedly attacked by a pit bull, a dog previously released from a local shelter. This horrifying event raises questions about the evaluation and training of high-risk animals before their release.

Regrettably, our current system allows the integration of high-risk animals into communities without appropriate evaluation or training, placing them under the care of individuals ill-prepared for such responsibility. This does not only pose a risk to other animals, but it also leaves our communities vulnerable. In the past year, a distressing rise of 11% brought the number of humans attacked by dogs in Miami-Dade to 1080. Almost 20% of these attacks required medical intervention.

The need for change is urgent and crucial. It's imperative that animal shelters only release high-risk animals to professionals trained to provide necessary behavior modification training before adoption. Alternatively, they could educate and train potential adopters to adequately care for these animals. This approach is far more beneficial than risking multiple lives to save one.

This advocacy goes beyond protecting our pets. It aims at safeguarding our community members. We seek your support by signing this petition. Our goal? To ensure that no innocent lives are put in danger due to insufficient animal shelter policies.

We are requesting a temporary ban on pit bull releases until regulations that secure responsible ownership are established. Together, let's make our communities safer for everyone—humans and pets.
