Mandate Anesthesia for Painful Gynecological Procedures

The Issue

I am writing this petition both as a nurse and a woman who has experienced the pain of gynecological procedures being performed without appropriate anesthesia. Along with countless others, I have undergone invasive procedures including IUD insertions and removals, cervical biopsies, uterine polyp removals, hysteroscopies, ovarian cyst removals, and endometrial biopsies, guided only to take Tylenol before their appointments.

The inconvenient truth is that Tylenol, the common protocol suggested by many providers, does not provide substantial pain relief during these situations. What we endure is more than discomfort. It's unbearable pain that can be significantly mitigated with the option of anesthesia or adequate pain medications. Many patients have reported passing out or fainting because of the pain.

Our health system prioritizes efficiency and speed. However, it should not be at the expense of patient comfort and dignity. The American Society of Anesthesiologists states, "The entire spectrum of anesthesia care is not solely a technical service but also includes patient assessment, patient education, and patient preparation." It's essential to apply this approach to gynecological procedures.

We can't sit back and accept subpar treatment as the norm any longer. We need to push for the standardization of anesthesia or proper pain medication options for gynecological procedures. This is not just about personal comfort - it's about recognizing and respecting the pain thresholds of patients and delivering healthcare services that prioritize patient wellbeing as much as procedural success.

Stand with us. Help us make our voices heard. Help usher in a new era where no woman has to face the agonizing pain of gynecological procedures without proper pain relief. It's time to enact legislation that requires medical providers to provide the option of anesthesia or adequate pain medication for gynecological procedures. Every signature brings us a step closer to a more compassionate healthcare system. Make yours count. Sign the petition.
