Mandate All Retail Stores to Remain Closed on Sundays

Mandate All Retail Stores to Remain Closed on Sundays

The Issue

I, alongside many devout individuals, believe that Sundays should be a day of rest and spiritual reflection. As a Christian, the majority religion in the United States (representing around 65% of the population), Sundays hold a particular significance for me. Mirroring the sentiment of millions of believers, we view this day as a holy day set aside for worship and rest.

Having a constant five-to-six-day work week has caused serious physical and mental health issues amongst retail workers. Studies show that an unrelenting work schedule can lead to fatigue, stress, and even depression. Retail workers contribute significantly to our vibrant economy and deserve at least one undisturbed day for rest and recuperation.

Personally, I have had to work many Sunday mornings, consistently, leading me to have to miss church attendance and harming my mental well being. When I did have the chance to return to church, it was after working on Sunday mornings for two months straight, and I felt like a guest in my own church.

In countries such as Germany, Spain, and Austria, retail shops remain closed on Sundays, not only respecting religious customs but also encouraging a more balanced work-life rhythm. Following this example, a Sunday off would provide an opportunity for all retail employees to rejuvenate and spend quality time with their loved ones.

Let us prioritize our people's mental and physical health, uphold our respect for religious beliefs, and ensure a more balanced approach to working hours in the retail sector. Please sign this petition to advocate for 'Sunday: A Day Off' for our hardworking retail workers.
