Mandate all automobiles be equipped with a Breath Alcohol Ignition Interlock Device to prevent drunk driving.
The Issue
Drivers under the influence (DUI) of alcohol have affected the lives of too many people for far too long. In order to effectively eliminate this problem, we petition our government to establish law requiring all automobiles in the United States to be equipped with a federally approved breath alcohol ignition interlock device (BAIID) that successfully prevents people under the influence of alcohol from driving. A government mandate for the automobile industry to install such devices will efficiently and effectively lower DUI-related crime rates -an effect that will give the judicial system more leeway to reallocate taxpayer-dollars, currently used to investigate and prosecute numerous DUIs, to more appropriate areas that require additional funds currently unavailable due to budget cuts. Since the BAIID's sensors are commonly calibrated at 30, 60, or 90-day intervals- recalibration and its cheap costs should then be incorporated with the typical maintenance of automobiles. While the primary objective for the government is to establish a law that mandates all vehicles be equipped with a federally approved BAIID, its secondary objective should be to ease the burden of the law's economic costs to the individual. If for some reason the individual must be burdened with the responsibility of installing, maintaining, and calibrating the BAIID-the average cost would be about $75 per month. This law should come into effect with the next renewal of registration with the states' respective Departments of Motor Vehicles. In memory of the countless lives that were needlessly lost and in recognition of drunk driving's desist in our society, we propose May 10 be proclaimed Drunk Driving Victims' Remembrance Day.
