Children, our future, are increasingly not making it home from school, striking fear in the hearts of parents in Miami, FL, and indeed across the country. As community members, parents, and guardians, we fervently believe that safety should be a top priority in our schools.

Sadly, school shootings in the United States have been steadily increasing, a fact no one can ignore. Gun violence in schools has become a significant concern, with alarming statistics highlighting the impact on children. In the 2021-2022 school year, there were 193 incidents of gunfire at preschools and K-12 schools, resulting in 59 fatalities and 138 injuries. Approximately 46% of victims were students, indicating that children are directly affected by this violence.

With this in mind, we are petitioning for our school districts to mandate the implementation of Active Intruder and Gunshot Wound classes in the curriculum. These measures aim to equip our children, teachers, and school staff members with the knowledge and skills to react and survive in case of such tragic and unwanted events.

With this training, we can empower our children and shape a safer, better educational environment for them. The Department of Homeland Security highlights the importance of such training, indicating that being prepared can increase survival rates in such scenarios.

Our children's lives are too valuable to put at risk and it is our collective responsibility to ensure their safety. Please support this initiative to create safer learning environments for our children.
