Mandate Accessibility for Everyone With Austism, ADHD, and Sensory Processing Disorder
The Issue
Living with Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). I also have multiple friends who are on the autism spectrum. We understand firsthand the challenges that come with navigating spaces not designed to accommodate our unique needs. This is why we are advocating for change.
In the United States alone, it is estimated that 1 in 6 children could have sensory processing symptoms that may be significant enough to affect their everyday life functions (source: SPD Foundation). Furthermore, approximately 1 in 54 children has been identified with autism spectrum disorder according to estimates from CDC's Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network. ADHD also affects an estimated 6.1 million children aged 2-17 years including 388,000 young children aged 2-5 years (source: CDC).
Given these statistics, it's clear that a substantial number of individuals could benefit from buildings being more accessible. Yet many structures do not take into account the unique needs of those with sensory processing disorders or neurodivergent conditions like autism or ADHD/ADD.
We propose requiring all buildings whether they be public institutions or private businesses - to implement accessibility measures for individuals who have SPD, autism or ADHD/ADD. These measures can include but are not limited to noise-cancelling areas for those sensitive to sound; and quiet rooms where individuals can retreat if they feel overwhelmed.
By making this change we will create an inclusive environment where everyone feels comfortable and accepted regardless of their neurological condition. Please sign this petition if you believe in creating a world where everyone can navigate comfortably through any building regardless of their neurological differences.
