Mandate a Referendum on the Implementation of Digital Currency in New Zealand
The issue
As a proud citizen of New Zealand, I cherish the tradition of teaching our children about the value and importance of money through tangible means. The tooth fairy, lawn mowing, dog walking, car washing and helping out around home are all great ways for kids to be given cash rewards. These interactions with physical currency provide valuable lessons about saving and spending responsibly.
However, there is an increasing push towards digital currencies worldwide. While these new forms of currency offer potential benefits such as greater convenience and security against theft or fraud, they also pose significant challenges to our traditional understanding and use of money and government control of what our money is used for.
In 2020 alone, global cryptocurrency users surpassed 100 million (source: Crypto.com Report), demonstrating a rapid shift towards digital currencies. However, this transition should not be made without considering the views of all citizens.
We believe that such a significant change in our financial system should not be decided by government or industry leaders alone but should involve every citizen's input. Therefore we call on the New Zealand government to hold a referendum asking whether we want digital currency implemented in our country.
This is not just about preserving traditions; it's about ensuring that any changes made reflect the will and best interests of all New Zealanders. Please sign this petition if you agree that your voice deserves to be heard on this important issue.
