Mandate a Minimum of 60 Minutes Unstructured Recess in All U.S. Public Schools

The Issue

During my 6th grade year at Plainwell Middle School, a grave injustice was committed – they took away our recess. The ripple effect of this decision launched an era of my academic life, and that of my peers, where we endured the majority of our 8-hour school day trapped within the four walls of a building. This generated resentment towards school, directly tied to the overflowing energy pent up in us. This pent-up energy frequently resulted in detentions and nearly led to my expulsion, all rooted in my growing disinterest in school.

Across America, public school children are experiencing the same plight and the same claustrophobic reality. But it's more than just the loss of play – studies have indicated the critical importance of unstructured play in promoting childhood mental health, enhancing learning outcomes, bolstering physical well-being, and cultivating social-emotional intelligence and conflict resolution. These vital developmental facets are being neglected when recess is eliminated.

Constantly being indoors and in structured environments hampers the creativity and independence of our children. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) believes that "recess is a crucial and necessary component of a child’s development." Let's take a sturdy step toward cementing 60 minutes of unstructured recess within the K-12 curriculum, ensuring that our children can thrive in all areas. The CDC recognizes the current national average of recess time is an abysmal 20 minutes per day.

By signing this petition, we demand to reincorporate this valuable tool back into our public school system, enhancing the physical, mental, social, and academic aspects of all students' lives. Let's give our children the breaks they need, the joy they crave, and the development opportunities they deserve. Sign this petition now to mandate a minimum of 60 minutes of unstructured recess in all U.S. public schools.
