The Issue

I am a resident of Nova Scotia and deeply committed to participating in our democratic process. When election season rolled around, I evaluated each candidate carefully and chose to cast my vote for a conservative representative. I believed in the policies and principles that they pledged to uphold. However, to my disappointment, the representative I voted for recently decided to cross the floor from the Conservative Party to join the Liberal Party.

This decision feels like a breach of trust to me and many others who supported the candidate based on their conservative platform. Changing party affiliation alters the fundamental principles that guide a representative's decisions and actions. It is only fair that when such a significant shift occurs, the electorate is allowed the opportunity to reassess their support under the new circumstances.

A by-election should be mandatory when a representative switches party allegiance. This would ensure that the public's voice is respected and heard, maintaining the integrity of the electoral process. The people of Nova Scotia deserve to know that their votes matter and that their elected officials genuinely represent their interests.

By mandating a by-election in this instance, we can strengthen accountability and trust in our democratic institutions. We urge the local legislative bodies and election authorities to consider this move not just as a request, but as an essential step in upholding democratic values.

Sign this petition, and help us advocate for a fair chance to vote on our chosen representation once more.
