The Issue

Working the night shift often means that my schedule is not like everyone else's. When I finish my shift at 1 a.m., I find myself needing to do my grocery shopping or buy essentials, only to find that the local Walmart has closed its doors for the night. This has become increasingly inconvenient for those of us who don’t work the typical 9 to 5.

Once a staple for overnight workers, students, and night owls alike, Walmart's 24-hour accessibility has been curtailed across many locations. This limitation not only disrupts the routines of night shift workers like myself but also affects families and individuals who prefer or require late-night shopping due to various reasons like childcare, busy day schedules, or personal preferences.

Studies show that a significant portion of Americans work non-standard hours. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, as of 2020, roughly 15 million Americans work night shifts, overnights, or in early morning shifts. This demographic segment needs stores like Walmart to be open 24 hours for the seamless integration of shopping into their lives.

Returning to a 24-hour operation model will also benefit Walmart economically by capturing sales from night time shoppers who otherwise can't spend at other closed locations. Additionally, it creates job opportunities for those who thrive in night shift roles.

Consumers greatly value flexibility and accessibility, and with many facets of modern life operating round the clock, it’s time for Walmart to resume its role as a community pillar that caters to all of its customers, regardless of the hour.

Let's urge Walmart to reconsider and reinstate their 24-hour shopping policy nationwide. Sign this petition to bring back the convenience and accessibility that many individuals and families rely on every day.
