The Issue

In Albany, GA, March 26, 2019, my life took an unimaginable turn when my father and brother were both killed in an accident caused by the distracted driving of Ryan Peter Jewell. After waiting 5 years for a court date, our family was left shattered, and left grappling with the heart-wrenching loss of two beloved individuals taken from us prematurely and senselessly.

This petition seeks justice for the victims of The State of Georgia v. Ryan Peter Jewell by advocating for a sentence that reflects the gravity of his actions. Distracted driving is a serious offense, one that results in thousands of preventable deaths and injuries each year. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), distracted driving claimed 3,142 lives in the United States in 2019 alone. For offenders like Jewell, accountability is crucial, both as a lesson and as a deterrent.

We urge the judicial system to impose a sentence of 2 years in prison for Jewell alongside 7 to 8 years of closely monitored probation. This proposed sentence is after Ryan’s first trial where he would be convicted guilty.  This is proposed nearly a year after he served 42 days of his 6 month sentence before he was let out. This is also after his attempts to have all charges dropped and have a chance for a clean record. We hope this sentence will balance punitive measures with rehabilitative efforts and, aiming to ensure he recognizes the impact of his actions and works to amend them.

By requiring a stringent sentence, we can collectively reaffirm the value of life and personal responsibility in our community. It sends a powerful message that distracted driving will not be tolerated, and those who engage in it will face serious consequences.

We seek your support to honor the memory of those we have lost and to foster safer roads for everyone in Albany, GA. There is no reason for people to lose the rest of their lives to something easily preventable. Please demand justice with us by signing this petition and ensuring that the courts deliver a sentence befitting the severity of the crime committed against my family and the lack of urgency from the judicial system here in the 229.
