I personally know how devastating it is to be caught off-guard by an unexpected termination, especially after putting in hard work and dedication to complete a full shift. Employers require us to provide a two-week notice if we decide to leave a job, yet they can turn around and terminate us without any warning or time to prepare. This practice is not just unfair; it’s a holdover from less enlightened times.

All over the country, too many hardworking individuals and families are being blindsided by sudden dismissals. They walk into their jobs one morning, work diligently throughout the day, only to be told at the end of their shift that they are no longer needed. This leaves them without income or immediate prospects, during a time when employment is scarce, and financial stability is precarious due to ongoing economic pressures.

We are calling on lawmakers and labor officials to take a stand for workers' rights and pass legislation that ensures a basic level of respect and dignity in the workplace. This legislation should include a requirement for employers to provide at least two weeks' notice before terminating an employee, as well as a ban on same-day firings after an employee has completed their shift. These are common-sense protections that recognize the humanity and dignity of the workforce.

By mandating a standard notice period, employees would gain crucial time to seek alternative employment, safeguard their families from sudden financial distress, and transition more smoothly between jobs. It would also foster a more respectful and transparent working environment where both employers and employees can thrive.
