Malta: Support a Moratorium on Deep Sea Mining

Malta: Support a Moratorium on Deep Sea Mining
The Issue
Dear Minister for Environment, Energy and Regeneration of the Grand Harbour and Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs,
We are writing to express our profound concern regarding the imminent threat posed by deep-sea mining. Our purpose is to strongly advocate for Malta to align with the 27 nations that have already called for a moratorium, precautionary pause, or ban on this practice.
By joining this international effort, Malta can contribute to a significant environmental and equitable victory by endorsing a moratorium on deep-sea mining.
The deep sea represents a crucial biodiversity hotspot, a vital carbon sink, and a repository of marine genetic resources. The potential consequences of deep-sea mining include irreversible damage to ecosystems, with economic benefits accruing only to a few stakeholders.
Given the ongoing warnings from scientists about the far-reaching and irreversible impacts of deep-sea mining, coupled with insufficient scientific knowledge to make informed decisions, we urge you to support a moratorium or precautionary pause on this practice.
We appreciate your attention to this urgent matter and look forward to Malta's leadership in safeguarding our oceans for future generations.
