Mohamed Elaida started this petition to Malta Government and

Both the Government and the opposition have long stressed on the noise pollution reduction and control in the South, particularly in Birzebbuga.  The current government has also, for the first time, established a Ministry for Energy, Enterprise and Sustainable Development.

Noise is another type of pollutant that is harming to the environment and the inhabitants subjected to it.

Noise pollution can cause health problems to people and wildlife. Loud or inescapable sounds can cause hearing loss, stress, and high blood pressure. Noise pollution is an invisible danger. It cannot be seen, but it is present around us. Noise pollution is considered to be any unwanted or disturbing sound that affects the health and well-being of humans and other organisms.

Noise pollution is backed by many studies and the below are few references:

Birzebbuga residents are already bombarded, on a daily basis, with excessive noise coming from:

1.    The Malta Freeport

2.    Daily traffic created by the concentration of industrial activity in the vicinity of the village

3.    Two existing racing tracks at Hal Far

4.    A shooting range at Hal Far

5.    Overhead Aircraft landing approaches and take offs

Some of these noises are received by the residents at levels that is prohibited under international law.

we have, recently, learnt that a proposed new car-racing track which will be located at Ħal Far, close to two already existing race tracks.  This will, potentially, add to the existing noise pollution that already troubles us; the Birżebbuġa residents.

We are not against having a car race track in Malta,. But we do not wish that this is built in an already noise infested area. It is simply not acceptable that we, the Birzebbuga residents, be expected to bear almost all of it.

We, the Birżebbuġa residents, cannot accept any further noise pollution. We expect that national burdens, especially those with a high level of noise emission, be distributed and shared evenly across the country.

Therefore we, the Birzebbuga residents, are hereby appealing to the government to review the decision taken not to place such race track at Hal Far i.e. within 600 mtrs from the nearest residential area.

Thank you for your consideration.
