Under the White Australia policy, non-European immigration was restricted by a fifty-word dictation test almost impossible to pass. The proposed increased English standard for Australian citizenship outlined by yourself and Peter Dutton echoes this and is grossly unfair:

• The standard of writing, reading, speaking and understanding (IELTS 6) is higher than the overseas student requirements to study at the Universities of Sydney, Canberra and Newcastle, the Australian Catholic University, RMIT and Swinburne.
• It is much higher than citizenship English standards in the UK ​(IELTS 4)​, US​, Canada and New Zealand.
• It will create a substantial sub-class of Australian permanent residents who can never become citizens, disproportionately affecting refugees and those with different writing scripts, although all family migrants such as spouses and parents will be affected.

Hundreds of thousands of valued Australian citizens who came here speaking other languages, the very people who have made Australia a multicultural success story, would have been rejected if this was policy when they applied.

Keep the current reasonable English standard for citizenship, which includes a registration process conducted in English, and a citizenship test "designed to assess whether you have a basic knowledge of the English language."
