Australia Needs An Animal Welfare Ombudsman

Australia Needs An Animal Welfare Ombudsman
The issue
Australia needs an independent ombudsman to regulate animal welfare. Currently, this responsibility lies sporadically across several state based organisations that are neither independent nor entirely equipped to truly regulate animal welfare in this country.
Animal Welfare in Australia is on the decline, with many groups wanting to make a change individually - but we need a holistic and organised approach to ensure that animal welfare is monitored, regulated and acted upon in a consistent and governmental approach.
We have the Department of Primary Industries looking after the LEGISLATION with relation to animal welfare, but sporadic bodies actually authorised to act on and enforce this legislation. This is not good enough.
We need a federal body to govern this, to support this, to fund and to manage this. Animals are beings that deserve to have just as much support as anyone else and a voice to ensure their welfare.
